Beyond Bars Representatives Desmond and Rashawn, share their personal stories of life impacting decisions that led to their incarcerations.

Recently, students at Tara High School in Baton Rouge had the unique opportunity to hear from two voices they won’t soon forget — Desmond and Rashawn, trusted speakers from Capital Region Crime Stoppers’ Beyond Bars program.

Launched in 2025 by Capital Region Crime Stoppers in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, the Beyond Bars initiative is a proactive effort to deter youth violence by bringing honest, firsthand accounts of life-altering choices into schools and youth groups across the region. The goal is simple: give students insight into how decisions made in youth can lead to lifelong consequences, and more importantly, inspire them to choose differently.

Truth from Those Who’ve Lived It

During the session at Tara High School, Desmond and Rashawn spoke candidly about the paths that led them to incarceration and the impact those choices have had on their lives — and the lives of those around them. Students were attentive as the speakers shared real-life experiences, emphasizing that every decision carries weight and consequence.

The presentation included a robust Q&A session where students asked thoughtful questions, seeking to understand not just what happened, but why it happened and how it might have been avoided. These interactive discussions are a key part of the Beyond Bars experience, allowing students to engage directly with the material and relate it to their own lives.

Speak Out To Save Lives! HOPE Initiative PSA Contest Registration Is Open!

Marijuana, vaping, heroin, the misuse of prescription opioids, and other drugs are increasing in pandemic proportions everywhere, especially here in the Baton Rouge area. Overdose deaths in our area are among one of the highest in the country, and although overdose deaths have made a slight decline in our area, reported overdose rates have not!

This is a public health crisis that knows no demographic barriers, and we must do all that we can to educate each other about these dangers and HELP all who are suffering (including friends and family members).

In today’s society, social media is one of the quickest and most efficient ways to raise awareness, especially among teens; so who better to get a message across than teens themselves?

We seek to spread the message of the dangerous threat that drug use poses to our community’s teenagers by inviting teens in grades 9 – 12 to form a team to create and submit a one to two-minute video. Your school’s PSA will focus on the dangers and consequences of choosing vapes, heroin, marijuana, prescription opioids, fentanyl, and/or other drugs.

1. Follow Local Laws and Regulations

Before planning your fireworks display, make sure you’re aware of and adhere to the laws and regulations in your area. Using illegal fireworks can result in hefty fines and pose serious safety risks.

2. Purchase from Licensed Vendors

Ensure you buy fireworks from reputable, licensed sellers. Fireworks from licensed vendors meet safety standards, reducing the risk of accidents.

3. Read Instructions Carefully

Each firework comes with specific instructions. Take the time to read and follow them to ensure you’re using the fireworks correctly and safely. Never use fireworks in ways they were not intended.

4. Always Have Adult Supervision

Saving Lives: Capital Region Crime Stoppers’ Narcan Nasal Spray Giveaways

In the ongoing battle against opioid-related incidents, Capital Region Crime Stoppers has been at the forefront, making significant strides to combat this crisis and save lives.

Recently, we organized two impactful Narcan nasal spray giveaway events in collaboration with local law enforcement agencies and the Louisiana Department of Health.

The first event, held on January 20th in Baton Rouge , was a resounding success thanks to the unwavering support of the community and our dedicated partners, including the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, EBR Coroner’s Office, BR Police Department, and the Louisiana Department of Health. Together, we distributed over 800 doses of Narcan nasal spray , equipping individuals with a crucial tool to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses and provide a second chance at life.

The second event, held on February 17th in Port Allen , was a hit too! This would not have been possible without the incredible support of the community and our amazing partners, such as the West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office and the Louisiana Department of Health. Together, we were able to distribute more than 200 doses of Narcan nasal spray , which is an essential tool in reversing the effects of opioid overdoses and providing individuals with a second chance at life.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of these events, whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness. Your support has been instrumental in advancing our mission to create a safer future for our region.

The importance of Narcan nasal spray cannot be overstated. With opioid-related incidents on the rise, having access to this life-saving medication can mean the difference between life and death. By empowering members of our community with Narcan, we are not only saving lives but also fostering a safer and more resilient environment for all.

This initiative ensures that every BRPD officer is equipped with Narcan nasal spray, empowering them to intervene swiftly in overdose situations and save lives. Last year alone, BRPD officers used Narcan nasal spray to rescue over 30 individuals from the brink of death. With this donation, we are doubling down on our commitment to protecting our community and supporting our law enforcement partners in their life-saving efforts.

Mardi Gras Do’s and Don’ts

It’s February and you know what that means, IT’S MARDI GRAS!

Mardi Gras is one of the most exciting times here in Louisiana, but it can also be a very dangerous time as an attendee.

Whether you’re spending Mardi Gras in the Capital Region or in other areas of Louisiana, you need to pay attention to our list of Mardi Gras do’s and don’ts:

Do’s:

Keep all beads, small trinkets and plastic bags out of the reach of children under age 2.
Be extra careful driving or walking near parades and parade traffic. If you are consuming alcohol, choose a responsible, designated driver.
Establish a meeting place should you get separated at a parade or other Mardi Gras event.
To avoid becoming a potential victim, think twice before venturing into unknown parts of the city, or traveling in dim or unlit areas on foot.
Keep your eyes peeled for any unusual behavior from others and report a crime if you see it being committed.

Don’ts:

DON’T assume traffic will stop for you. The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission discovered the five-day Mardi Gras holiday is the most dangerous holiday for car accidents on Louisiana highways.
DON’T approach horses or other animals participating in the parade unless the rider/owner indicates to you that it is okay. Animals can be unpredictable, especially when in large crowds and loud noise.
DON’T run between or chase floats for throws and reach under a float for anything – even if the float is stopped.
DON’T bring your pets to Mardi Gras. With children screaming, “throws” soaring through the air, and very few places to take refuge, even the most stable pets will struggle to remain calm.
DON’T ruin the fun for others. Underage drinking, public intoxication, nudity, public urination, climbing, fighting, and lewd behavior are all common behaviors can end with you and your friends in jail.
DON’T carry large sums of cash and be aware of possible pick-pocketers. Keep wallets on your person at all times and only bring the essentials.
